The duo of Sandy Ewen and Tom Carter has been performing and recording since 2003. Their first recordings were released as Away Away (Collective Jyrk, 2006). This was followed up with Brighton Beach (Wholly Other, 2012) and In Between the Known and the Unknown (Wholly Other, 2016). The free improvisational guitar duo is a blend of texture, drone and psychedelia.

Sandy Ewen is an experimental guitarist, artist and architect currently based in Brooklyn NY.  Sandy’s guitar playing is centered on texture and timbre and employs a multitude of objects and extensive extended techniques. Sandy’s recent recording output include Solo (Scatter, 2023), duo with Jason Nazary, A Beaded Gesture (Notice Recordings, 2023), duo with Maria Chavez, All The Duos (Orb Tapes, 2023), duo with Lisa Cameron, See Creatures Too (Astral Spirits, 2021), quartet with Roscoe Mitchell, Damon Smith and Weasel Walter, A Railroad Spike Forms The Voice (ugEXPLODE, Balance Point Acoustics, 2021), and trio with Keith Rowe and Damon Smith and Gooseberry Marmalade Houston 2012 (Balance Point Acoustics, 2021). Currently awaiting release are three recordings – a duo with Lisa Cameron, a quartet with Roscoe Mitchell, Damon Smith & Weasel Walter, and another solo recording. In Brooklyn, Sandy frequently performs alongside Ravi Coltrane, Michael Vatcher, Sam Newsome, James Paul Nadien and Weasel Walter. In 2023, Sandy played the Moers festival (Germany), Wels festival (Austria) and Molten Plains festival (Texas). In 2018, Sandy performed at the Sant’anna Arresi Jazz Festival in Sardinia, the Experimental Sound Studio Option Series in Chicago, and the High Zero Festival in New York. In 2014, she performed at San Francisco’s 13th Annual Outsound New Music Summit, and she has made several appearances at Austin’s annual No Idea Festival. Ewen enjoys making video art and digital animations and has created many video pieces to accompany music. Sandy is also known for slide projections and microcollages.

Tom Carter is a guitar player best known for his work with acclaimed psych-drone iconoclasts Charalambides. Since 2000, however, he has become increasingly active as not only a solo artist but as a collaborator. He has performed with improvising musicians as diverse as Thurston Moore, Jandek, Tetuzi Akiyama, Matt Valentine, and many others, as well as being a key member in groups like Badgerlore (with Ben Chasny of 6 Organs of Admittance), Friday Group, Mudsuckers (with Robert Horton and D. Yellow Swans), and Zaika (with Marcia Bassett of the Double Leopards, GHQ, and Hototogisu). Carter’s solo work covers a lot of territory, but latter-day sightings show him to be concentrating on looped guitar drones of immensely stacked beauty, with heaps of psychedelic melodic content missing from the repertoires of many noise and drone bands. His influences include everyone from LaMonte Young to David Crosby. Upcoming recordings include solo disks for Important Records, Three Lobed Records, and Digitalis Industries, along with a pile of releases on his own Wholly Other imprint, active since 1994.
