This Friday Jan 5th 8pm @ the Red Room – Minimal Disturbance – Jack Wright and Ron Stabinsky! Joining them, local trombone master and UMBC improvisation professor Patrick Crossland!!
Also Mojuba Duo – Jamal Moore (reeds) and DC’s Nik Francis (percussion/electronics)
Jack Wright, for anyone who may not know, is a spiritual father figure for the High Zero festival. Aside from his influential saxophone music, he is also a thinker and cultural critic and author. Now 81, he has lived some diverse lives, as activist and academic, until settling into music full-time in 1979–free playing is all he’s done since then. He tours Europe (April 2023) and the US, where he acquired the moniker the “Johnny Appleseed of Free Improvisation” in the 80s.
Of all the wide-ranging music groups in which Ron Stabinsky has participated, probably best known are the notorious band Mostly Other People Do The Killing (now a trio with Moppa Elliott and Kevin Shea) and the reunited rock band Meat Puppets, which he joined in 2018. Along with being a dedicated improvisor, Ron is also a virtuoso jazz and classical pianist!
Mojuba Duo is Baltimore’s Jamal Moore (reeds/percussion) and DC’s Nik Francis (percussion/electronics). They probably need no intro here – some of the best improvisors in the area.
