Killick, everyone’s favorite string-plucking shaman, stops by the Red Room again to play music with Baltimore musicians. This time, he will be joined in sets by pedal steel guitarist Susan Alcorn, daxophonist and clarinetist Samuel Burt, and saxophonist and artist Sarah Hughes. Killick will be playing two custom-made stringed instruments, the H’arpeggione and the fretless Walrus guitar.

Killick Hinds of Athens, Georgia plays Appalachian Trance Metal with an emphasis on unquantifiable rhythms, intuitive intonation, and shamanistic ROYGBIV. He plays a variety of unusual stringed instruments (bowed H’arpeggione; Big Red harp guitar; 3rd bridge Harmonic Isolator; infinite sustain Vo-96; fretless guitar; quarter tone fretted guitar; banjo; 3-string one-holer; 6- & 7-string guitar) with a comprehensive approach to genres known and as-yet-unlabeled. Specific focus includes sympathetic string activity; microtonality; pantonality; natural harmonic fretting; playing between the fretting hand and nut; and emerging technologies to facilitate new musical pathways.
He has toured extensively as a performer (since 1985, hundreds of club/gallery/school/festival appearances in Maine, Vermont, Massachusetts, New York, New Jersey, Pennsylvania, Maryland, Virginia, North Carolina, South Carolina, Georgia, Florida, Alabama, Tennessee, Illinois, Colorado, California, Louisiana) and is an active organizer and promoter of lesser-heard music. He founded record label Solponticello in 2001, and now runs H(i)nds(i)ght Studio for his musical and written word pursuits.
One of the world’s premiere exponents of her instrument, Susan Alcorn has taken the pedal steel guitar far beyond its traditional role in country music. Having first paid her dues in Texas country & western bands, she began to expand the vocabulary of her instrument through her study of 20th century classical music, visionary jazz, and world musics.
Though known as for her solo work, she has collaborated with numerous artists including Pauline Oliveros, Chris Cutler, the London Improvisors Orchestra, the Glasgow Improvisors Orchestra, Joe McPhee, Ken Vandermark, Nate Wooley, Ingrid Laubrock and Leila Bourdreuil, George Burtm Evan Parker, Michael Formanek, Zane Campbell, and Mary Halvorson among others.
Samuel Burt is a composer in Baltimore, composing for orchestra, small groups, piano, and electronic music. He improvises on clarinet, bass clarinet, and daxophone. He is a professor at Towson and Johns Hopkins. He is a board member of the High Zero Foundation, curating shows and running improvisation workshops at the Red Room.
Sarah Hughes is an alto saxophonist, doubling on flute and clarinet, from Pasadena, Maryland. She is also a composer of ensemble music as well as electronic music for solo artist. Sarah has been a music educator for over 10 years, but she considers herself first and foremost a free improviser, creating within, on top of, and despite many genre frameworks including jazz, experimental composition and noise, swing, blues, folk, rap and hip-hop, and rock. Sarah prefers to emote onstage in the most expressive and readily available way possible.
