Album Release show for Rules & Rungulations, unconventional music from a Eurorack system with the beating heart of a Benjolin. This show, featuring Sam Burt on modular synthesizer, celebrates the release of his new album. He will play through a tangle of cords, cross-patched with partner Dave Benham.
Sharing the bill, Carolyn Zaldivar and Ian Franklin form another modular duo.
Sam Burt started his foray into electronic music with keyboards and an Atari computer back in the 1990s. He studied tape music techniques, patched an ARP synthesizer, composed with ProTools, and began programming in Pure Data in college, mentored by teachers Leonard Ball, Geoffrey Wright, and McGregor Boyle. His music has always been driven by indecipherable logic that can only be experienced intuitively. Bringing this approach to modular synthesis, Burt creates complex, interdependent systems where the boundary between composer, performer, and observer blurs. By exchanging control voltages and audio signals with a collaborative partner, a singular, gestalt textures emerges, reflecting the interplay of collective observation.
