Join us for a fabulous night of solos, duos, and trios. Jessica Ackerley, traveling from Honolulu, will join local artists, Alma Laprida and Rachel Beetz, for a multi-set performance of experimental and improvised music.
About the Artists
Jessica Ackerley is a Canadian guitarist, improviser and composer based in Honolulu and a
current PhD candidate at University of Hawai’i after a decade of living in New York City.
Ackerley continually develops a hybrid musical language drawing on the influences of Black
American Music and avant-garde improvisers, as well as the culture of the thriving New York
City rock and noise scenes. Since 2017, Ackerley has released seventeen albums to much critical
acclaim with features in Wire Magazine, Pitchfork, BBC Radio, and Bandcamp. They have been
commissioned by Adult Swim, Mutual Mentorship, and New Music USA as well as received
funding from Canada Council for the Arts and Foundation for Contemporary Arts. As an active
performer, Ackerley has toured extensively throughout North America, performing at noteworthy
venues like The Met Breuer, The Stone, Something Else! Festival, Coastal Jazz Festival, and
countless underground venues ranging from the basements of houses to record shops.
Composer and flutist, Rachel Beetz experiences sound as touch. Her music “suggests the action of supernatural entities,” (The Quietus), while also being a “soundtrack for a cooking show turned film noir” (Best of Experimental Bandcamp). Beetz’s sound projects have taken her from a sunless winter fjord, to empty grain bins of the American Midwest, and also into your kitchen. As a flutist, Rachel Beetz plays “elegantly” (Washington Post) while “evoking the roar of prehistoric animals” (San Diego Union Tribune). She primarily performs music by living composers and works from the last century. She is a member of the group Wild Up, Modern Current Ensemble, and Wasteland Music. You can hear her performances on Blue Griffin, One Sound Object, Orenda, Outside Time, iikki, Neuma, in addition Populist records where she is a co-director alongside Andrew McIntosh and Andrew Tholl. Beetz is currently a lecturer at Moorpark College and Peabody Conservatory.
Alma Laprida (San Miguel, Argentina) is a musician and multi-disciplinary artist whose creative pursuits encompass composition, improvisation, performance, installation, instrument building and radiophonic pieces. Alma has released three solo albums, collaborated on two, and contributed to various compilations. In 2021, after a decade of creative work and life in Buenos Aires, Alma relocated to Maryland, USA, and is very active in the DC artistic scene. Besides her solo work, she’s part of Hypnotized Chickens, the Subwoofer Duo and the Bureau of Sensory Affairs, and leads the Tromba Marina Quartet.
